| Tucker Creek's History |
| Tucker Creek Rabbitry was started as a small 4H herd in December of 1995. I got my first rabbit from my friend Jennifer, his name was Smokey. He was an Opal Netherland Dwarf. Smoky was a good bunny to start with, very calm and well behaved for showmanship. He however weighed well over 3 lbs and therefore never did well in confirmation. After Smokey, I found an ad in the local newspaper for a free rabbit and couldn't resist. The rabbit I got from the ad was a Chestnut Mini Lop Doe I named Dumbo. Dumbo was my first Doe. But she filled bigger shoes than just being my first doe, she was the first female animal I had ever owned. I tried many times to get her bred, but she never took, it was my belief that she was spayed. After Dumbo, I got Buddy. Buddy was a Black Dutch Doe. Buddy was a sweet rabbit, but protective of her cage. She also gave me my very first litter out of Smokey. There were 4 total. One Chestnut doe, Two Gold Tipped Steel Does, and one Gold Tipped Steel Buck. After Buddy, I got Buster. Ahh Buster.... I loved that rabbit. He was my first Rex. I totally fell in love with the Rex fur and had to have one. He was a Black/Orange and White Tri Color. He is dearly missed. Buster was bred to a New Zealand White doe named Daisy and produced the most beautiful Broken Chestnut doe for me that I called Big Bertha. She certainly lived up to her name being over 10 lbs. All the judges always loved her, and I know there were numerous times that I was told it was too bad that a crossbred couldn't win best in show. Her fur was so smooth and soft. Softer than Satin fur, almost like the Rex fur but longer..... She died on Memorial Day. So for me, Memorial day holds a very special place in my heart. If you ever saw me at County or State Fair, I was hardly ever without Bertha. I have gone through many different breeds since 1995. Here are the ones I remember. Angora, American Fuzzy Lop, Californian, Giant Chinchilla, French Lop, Mini Lop, English Lop, English Spot, Florida White, New Zealand White, Palomino, Himalayan, Polish, Rex, Satin, Mini Rex, Netherland Dwarf, Rhinelander, Silver Fox, Silver Martin, Tans, and of course my crossbreds..... I currently raise Holland Lops exclusively and Specialize in Otters! Melinda |
